Zinc, a key trace mineral, is found in almost every cell of the human body and stimulates the activity of approximately 100 enzymes. Zinc serves many roles in the body like immunity, gene expression, protein folding, enzyme function, and wound healing. Zinc deficiency depresses both innate and adaptive immune responses and inadequate zinc levels increase the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Many research studies have shown that zinc induces improved immune response during infection, such as increasing CD4 T cells and T lymphocytes. Zinc has been shown to interfere with viral replication. Additionally zinc may reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms.
