đ§ When the Mind Hurts, the Body Listens: How Trauma and Mental Health Impact Our Physical Health
We often separate physical and mental health into different categories. But the truth isâthey are deeply intertwined. Trauma, stress, anxiety, and emotional wounds donât just live in the mind. They show up in the body, too. And often, theyâre behind the stubborn symptoms we canât seem to shakeâgut issues, hormonal imbalances, chronic fatigue, and even weight fluctuations.
In my next episode of the H.E.R. Podcast, Iâm joined by Kayla Scheanon, a licensed professional counselor and expert in âself-partneringââa powerful practice of learning to trust yourself and heal from within. We dive into the connection between emotional wounds and physical symptoms, and why healing the nervous system is a key to restoring your health.
But first, letâs explore how trauma affects our body, and what you can do to start reclaiming your health.
The Mind-Body Connection: Traumaâs Hidden Influence
Trauma doesnât always look like one big eventâit can be a series of smaller emotional injuries over time. And when we experience trauma, the body responds by staying in a state of chronic stress or âfight or flight.â This triggers a cascade of health issues:
đż Gut Health â Stress impacts digestion, nutrient absorption, and gut microbiome balance. Many women struggling with bloating, IBS, or candida may find emotional trauma at the root of their symptoms.
đż Hormonal Imbalance â Trauma alters how the brain communicates with your endocrine system. Cortisol (the stress hormone) can override other hormones like progesterone, estrogen, and thyroid hormonesâcausing mood swings, fatigue, low libido, and irregular cycles.
đż Immune Dysfunction â Chronic stress suppresses immune function, making it harder for the body to fight infections and contributing to inflammation and autoimmunity.
đż Weight Gain or Loss â Emotional dysregulation and trauma can lead to disordered eating, blood sugar imbalances, and metabolic issues.
  How to Identify Emotional Triggers
The first step to healing is awareness. Ask yourself:
When do my symptoms flare up?
Do certain people, situations, or thoughts trigger stress responses in my body?
What emotion might be underneath my fatigue, cravings, or digestive issues?
Journaling, breathwork, and mindfulness are powerful tools to help you connect the dots between emotional patterns and physical health. But you donât have to do it alone.
The Role of a Health Coach in Trauma-Aware Healing
As a health coach, my role is to walk alongside you, help you uncover root causes, and support you in creating sustainable change.
When emotional trauma is contributing to physical symptoms, I help:
â Track patterns and identify emotional and environmental triggers
â Build a nervous system support toolkit (like nutrition, breathwork, and boundaries)
â Refer you to the right professionalsâwhether thatâs a trauma-informed therapist, somatic healer, or mental health expert who can partner with us in your journey
True healing happens when we support the whole womanâbody, mind, and spirit.
You Are Not Alone
If youâve been spinning your wheels trying to âfixâ your health without seeing lasting results, it might be time to consider what your body has been trying to say all along.
You are not brokenâyou are beautifully and wonderfully made. And healing is possible.
đ§ââď¸ Tune in to my next podcast with Kayla Scheanon as we explore how to build a relationship with your inner self, recognize trauma patterns, and create a healing path forward. Her wisdom will help you reconnect with your body and finally feel safe inside it again.
đ§ Listen in, learn, and feel empowered to begin your healing journeyâbecause you deserve to thrive.
